Paphos hosts the most historical attractions as it was in fact, the capital of Cyprus in the Roman times. The old town of Paphos remains typically Cypriot with winding streets lined with restaurants, open-air cafes and ancient churches. It is alsoboasts a wonderful indoor market selling a colourful selection of fruits and vegetables.The lower and newer part of town is known as Kato Paphos and is the tourist area. Interesting sites in Paphos are The Mosaics (located in Kato Paphos) where amazing mosaics have been beautifully preserved for 16 centuries in the House of Dionysos. The Tombs of the Kings (Kato Paphos) where a wide area of underground tombs were carved out of solid rock creating burial chambers for ancient nobles.Approximately 15km east of Paphos you can see Aphrodite's Rock. This impressive landmark is where Aphrodite (the Greek goddess of love) is said to have risen from the waves. The ancient town of Paphos under the name Paleapaphos was built by the Achaeans Greeks arriving on the island on 12 century b.c in the area where the village of kouklia is located on the road to Limassol
In 4th century b.c the town was move 12 miles on the west coast of Paphos and given the name Nea Paphos and became the capital of Cyprus until the 3rd century a.d .
In this period very important facts haben as the arrival 35 a.d of St.Paul and Barnabas which they visited Paphos and they had their first speech about the new religion (Christianity). The Roman Governor of Paphos arrested them and tie them up on a Pillar and hid them 39 times and this Pillar is very well known today as St. Pauls Pillar.
After the mirricoule with the animator of the Roman Governor he became Christian and Cyprus became the oldest church in the world.
That’s why the church of Cyprus it is an apostolic created church and it was given the privilege of independency by the emperor of the Byzantines to have an Archbishop, to sign with red ink like the emperor and to hold an imperial ceptor.
This is also the reason that many holy figures visited the island from the early Christian years and many monasteries are created throughout the country and the mountains of Cyprus.
