The Thalassines Spilies (Sea Caves) area, on the coast near Peyia, with its sea caves and arches of white chalk, was once the breeding home of the Mediterranean Monk seal. Now this seal can only be seen occasionally in the more remote parts of the coastline. A little further north past Yeronissos island and the picturesque small fishing harbour of Ayios Yeorgios, strech the well-known surfs wept beaches of Toxeftra and Lara, where Green Turtles breed.Historical backroundAcording to the Greek Mythologie the King of Athens Ageas must send every 7 years 7 young girls and boys to the King MInos in Creete for food of Minotaurous (Minos sun) that he was living in Labyrinth.One of the young boys was Ageas sun Theseus , so the father came to an agreement with him that if he was alive
on the way back from Crete he must change the black flag on the ship with a white flag and the father will seat every day on the walls of the harbor of Piraeus and waiting his return .
When Theseus arrives on Crete the daughter of Minos Ariadne fell in love with Him and gave him a sponge to find his way out of Labyrinth.
After Theseus has killed Minotaurous he took Ariadne with him to Athens but he forgot to change the flag to a white one and when the Father Ageas saw the ship coming with the black flag he thought his sun is dead so he suicide by falling in the sea .The people of Athens to Remember their democratic King they gave to the sea his name and since then we call this sea Agean sea.
Theseus became the King of Athens and when the Trojan war began one of his suns with the name Akamas was involve in the war.
When the war was finished in 12 century b.c Akamas arrive in Cyprus on a Peninsula western of Paphos town and created a kingdom call Akamantis .
This is how the peninsula got the name from and until today we call it Akamas.
